I picked up the DVDs for the first two “Anne of Green Gables” series after seeing the musical version of the chronicle in Charlottetown. I lucked out because the DVDs have been out less than a month. The sincere film, of course, is worth 5 stars all by itself and is a classic adaptation of a beloved recent, so what I want to talk about is why Anne’s fans should retract up the DVD version as well. There are cast bios, previews of the other “Anne” works by Sullivan films, and some production stills.

However, the chief charms of the DVD version are the following: First, there is Megan Follows’ audition for the section of Anne, which is arresting to perceive her first attempts at nailing the character of Anne Shirley. Obviously, my only complaint with this DVD is going to be the exclusion of that documentary, which, I supposed, belonged to PBS and not Sullivan productions. So, I know that most of you reading this not only already have “Anne of Green Gables” on videotape, you have had it for a long time. I am unprejudiced here to disclose you that picking up the DVD version as well is worth the additional expenditure.

This novel video “Anne of Green Gables” and its sequel, “Anne of Avonlea” faithfully hold the palatable and inviting stories of the series of “Anne of Green Gables” books. The videos are favorites of me and my daughters — perfect for rainy weekends or days they conclude home from school due to illness. I am saddened to seek that the current is out-of-print and befriend the studio to re-release it. (Perhaps if seek information from is high enough, they will!)

Unfortunately, we recently tuned into the original PBS production of “Anne: The Continuing Tales.” This was a monumental disappointment that I can only liken to “The Godfather Portion III.” Although the Anne stories written by Lucy Maud Montgomery continue through her marriage, career and children, the producers of this movie discarded any relationship to the charming new stories or the memorable current characters. They merely borrowed the names of the characters and then created a highly extraordinary scenario that bore no hint of continuity between the fiercely independent, fiery, patriotic, and highly fair Anne, her bosom buddy Diana, or her sweetheart Gilbert. Throw in a baby who cries throughout the entire video, some wonderful WWI scenarios and politically apt but anachronistic “anti-war” sentiments, and you destroy up with a unfavorable mess.

He’s prone to whining, crying and throwing tantrums, but Vash detached manages to net the job done! Since I was introduced to Cowboy Bebop a small over a year ago, I’ve seen many different Anime, and I have to say flat out that Trigun is my approved. Ironic, considering that Vash the Stampede is the epitome of everything I couldn’t stand about Anime before I became a fan, but I actually come by Vash to be completely hysterical, and one my celebrated anime characters.

Its Wild West meets futuristic Sci-Fi in this anime about a man with names like ‘The Humanoid Typhoon’ and ‘The 60 Billion Double Dollar Man’. Beleived to be the cause of mass destruction wherever he goes, Vash is actually a misunderstood, respectable and peace-loving individual…who is armed to the teeth, with superhuman strength and hurry, the sharpest survey on the planet, and a 60 Billion Double Dollar bounty on his head that many are fair itching to accumulate their hands on. He hates violence and won’t bring himself to raze anyone…and he has his reasons.

The overall status of the point to is sizable, but only loosely follows the Manga, since the anime is very different towards the destroy. Every episode is a continuation in the overall myth. The first few episodes are mostly comic, but as the series progresses, Vash’s moral enemies thunder themselves and the indicate begins taking a darker tone. Many revelations about Vash’s mysterious origins are revealed, and at about the middle of the reveal there is an origin episode that explains it a bit moe. That said, this anime is both completely hysterical and filled with big action. Vash’s ridiculous behavior, expressionless facial expressions and whining and screaming add a whole dimension to the character. Half the time when I watched this note, I was laughing. Sometimes it was so humorous I was doubled over and tearing from the comedy aspect.

Side characters Meryl and Millie are also ample characters…Millie’s rather dreary but resourceful personality produce her one of the funniest characters on the explain (and one of my favorites) . As the second anime I got into after Bebop, I found it to be very attractive and easy to accept into. For those not in the know, Trigun was released in 1998, was originally created by Yasuhiro Nightow (manga) and is directed by Satoshi Nishimura (Anime) . It is the legend of Vash the Stampede (Johnny Young) and his struggle to near to terms with his tortured past. Becoming fervent along the plan with the misguided Humanoid Typhoon are Milly Thompson (Lia Sargent) and Meryl Strife (Dorothy Melendrez) of the Bernadelli Insurance Agency, who were assigned to Vash in an attempt to avert the afflict he may cause in his future exploits.

Also drawn into Vash’s destiny is Nicholas D. Wolfwood, a traveling priest who carries a massive horrible that carries an astonishing secret. Trying to elope a sordid past of his occupy, Vash and Wolfwood are like a flash friends.

Trigun is intense. The first three episodes I saw on a friend’s computer. They were in their modern Japanese and I found them to be quite droll. I did a bit of research and read an article that said the series pulls a 180 a cramped less than halfway in.

This friend and I pain of going and renting the first five volumes. Episodes 1-16. I’ve finally seen episodes 17-26 and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Trigun is one of the darkest Anime series I’ve seen thus far. The article was in no design lying. I never expected the subject matter to buy such a swift, dusky turn.

The characters can be quite shameful and violent. There’s no diagram around it. The fable gets depressing. If you grow to worship these characters, grow to feel the struggle they encounter, grow to want to inspect them succeed… Then you can’t relieve but want to weep for these people.

In fact, if you do grow to savor these characters, you will probably wail like babies in the last four episodes… especially an episode tantalizing a very touching scene between Milly and Wolfwood…

The series defiantly connects with me on a lot of different emotional levels. To quote Meryl, “Everyone who has become fervent with him, has somehow gained an emotion they had once lost.” This is quite apt, even for myself. Seeing these characters in action is an emotional roller coaster.

Trigun is an astonishing work of Animation done correctly. The only accurate flaw is the ending… it titters off, leaving too many questions and not enough answers. It’d lead one to maintain that another series were in the works. With luck, “Trigun: Maximum” will become an Anime soon enough and hit American shores, because the yarn of Vash the Stampede simply isn’t done.

A perfect reveal of how issue acting and animation can be quite effective in pulling on emotionl heart strings. I suggest this series to any Anime fan.

I agree with most of reviewer here that Roberto Rossellini’s Initiate City is a enormous film – ground-breaking work that is yet racy in the most simple draw. However, it appears that most of the reviewers refer to the VHS version. I bought this DVD the moment I heard that it was on DVD, and am remarkable disappointed. Overall transfer is infamous, subtitles miss a bulk of dialogues, and most of all, there is at least one missing shot that I noticed in this transfer (It is the well-known shot in which the resistant is being tortured by blowtorch) . I had VHS released by Connoisseur, which is capable to this DVD on every level.

So occupy VHS or better yet notify Image to restore this gem.

I wonder about some complaints over this DVD. The transfer is lovely – it’s an ancient, black-and-white film and for all that looks handsome darn capable. Less than 5% of the dialogue is untranslated in subtitles, and as an Italian speaker I can suppose you what’s left out is insignificant chit chat.

See it for the fair performances, the achievement of its making, and for the history it portrays.

Where, oh where to open? This place is injurious, relate quality varies from dreadful to worse! Hard to gain they would even release a couple of these unwatchable gems(unwatchable because of portray quality) on dvd at all, i mean what was the point of releasing this garbage? I wish Lugosi Jr could salvage control of these films and do them good! For obedient Lugosi i recommend avoiding this and check out titles by Roan Group(they restore beautifully) or the Navarre Corporation who release Bela Lugosi Estate versions of the dvds.Taking a chance to scrutinize “if” it might be worthwhile, will only leave you with a box of coasters.

First I’ll address the logo. I looked forward in fright after reading that Passport always puts logos on the shroud in their releases. I expected a substantial brightly colored emblem, drawing my observe away from the films. In reality it’s a rather diminutive faint image that I completely forgot about after the first three movies. In fact, if I had to testify, I couldn’t boom in court that it was on every single one, but it probably is. Nevertheless there’s no reason for it to be there.

They study and sound like warmed over crap and that’s all I’m going to say about the matter.

Starting off the third disc, The Shadowy Eyes of London looks a small better, but it sounded like the speakers on my tv were crammed with cotton. Not drawl this time, unbiased stupid muffled sound. The Devil Bat looks the best I’ve ever personally seen it, but I hope to secure a better copy someday. The Corpse Vanishes looks fabulous except for that logo, and the sound is sizable too. I wouldn’t seek information from to explore a better copy anywhere.

The films on the fourth disc are all passable, although Unnerved To Death would probably sight better if you turned the color on your tv all the contrivance down, since it’s main dilemma is that the colors disappear and shimmer, and it’s kind of distracting.

Ironically, the Ed Wood films are the best looking ones in this place, and they beget the final disc.

For all its assets, however, NADIA suffers from one fatal flaw that prevents it from being the classic it aims to be–it does not always discontinue afloat. The first twenty-two episodes are customary adventure at its best, with humor, young admire, traumatic situations which involve death, and compelling, spicy mysteries as we learn about Nadia, the Nautilus, and the Atlanteans. Midway through, it devolves into a painfully dumb, unengaging, haphazard, incoherent Saturday morning cartoon, with warped characterizations, sloppy animation, and even worse concepts for episodes totally devoid of imagination or credibility. At this juncture, a deus ex machina appears in the unlikely guise of a servant. Suffice it to say that all is well that ends well.

I absolutely loved this film, despite the fact that it was somewhat predictable. It is fair a exquisite period film with stunning performances by the entire cast. I smooth cannot understand why Canadian actor Thomas Gibson has not yet become a major star, given his exceeding valid looks and talent. Tom Conti is especially endearing as the somewhat liberal blue blood who champions Edith. Cari Shayne gives a shimmering performance as the favorable Edith, while Meredith Baxter is friendly in the role of the somewhat thoughtless Mrs. Hamilton. Bridgitta Dau shines as the bookish but irrepressible Amy, and Bridget Conley Walsh is well cast as the stunning but soulless Ida.

This film is well worth having in one’s personal collection, if one is a devotee of period pieces or simply a fan of Louisa May Alcott. Moreover, at the designate for which it is selling, this DVD has got to be one of the best bargains around.

If “Itsy-bitsy Women” is the unusual wrapped around Jo March, then “The Inheritance” is her sister Beth — little and unnoticed, but sweet and dazzling all the same. This shapely period TV movie is (very loosely) based on the mediocre fresh of the same name, by the classic author Louisa May Alcott, and this is one of the few instances where the movie is vastly better than the book.

Edith Adelon (Cari Shayne) has lived with the wealthy Hamilton family ever since she was a baby, and is now the companion of bookish Amy (Brigitta Dau), and a reliable horsewoman to boot. But her life changes with the arrival of two guests at the Hamiltons’ home: the sparkling, calculating Ida (Brigid Conley Walsh) and stunning James Percy (Thomas Gibson) .

James and Edith are drawn together first as friends, and then by something deeper. But Ida, who wants him for herself, manipulates Edith into rejecting James when he proposes to her. Then after Edith takes area in a notorious horse bustle, mysterious thefts and a family tragedy threaten to derail her entire life with the Hamiltons.

Louisa May Alcott wrote “The Inheritance” when she was only seventeen, and the book is syrupy, over-romancitized and cliched. But the movie “The Inheritance” is what Alcott probably would have turned the book into, had she rewritten it instead of burying it in a trunk. The wilting lily Edith is replaced with a strong, generous young woman, and the location is spiced up with some social commentary.

To some degree, it’s a typical love-conquers-all romance, and the dialogue borders on cheesy at times, although overall the scripting glowing apt. It’s the execution that is likeable. The characters ramble around lush manorhouses chunky of light and beauty, or idyllic forests. And the gooey romance is glossed over with some spirited commentary on stuffy traditions and hypocrisies, such as why women were not allowed to dash astride. Also a touch of tragedy, when one of the characters dies.

Cari Shayne is quite well-behaved as Edith, especially since she has to be so NICE all the time; Gibson is similarly splendid, and they have some solid chemistry. Walsh is not so reliable, but Ida is given few dimensions beyond a catty nastiness. And Dau, Meredith Baxter and Tom Conti are profitable as the brainy, bookish Amy, the long-suffering Mrs. Hamilton, and the rebellious but sweet Mr. Hamilton.

“The Inheritance” takes the same-named new and rips it apart, turns it inside out, reembroiders it and sticks it succor together — and the result is remarkably polished and strong. Louisa May Alcott would have been proud.

- “The Petite Giant” is a pre code 1933 vehicle, a typical sparkling funny melodrama with Robinson as a beer baron who mixes in society, a not dissimilar theme to the later and far valid “A Diminutive Case of Destroy”. In this case, Robinson is mild a bit cessation to “Runt Ceasar” to be laughable and the main interest is the endless slang and pre-code innuendo.

- From 1937, “Kid Galahad” is an curious prize fight melodrama. Robinson is paired with a very pretty Bette Davis as his moll and together, they poke up the shroud with their magnetism. Bogart and Robinson have a large shoot out at the raze of the film.

- “The Fabulous Dr Clitterhouse”, released in 1938 and based on a successful West Raze play, stars Robinson as a surgeon who infiltrates a gang to analyse the criminal mind. With Bogart in help as a particularly vicious crook and the glorious and brittle Claire Trevor as the leader of the gang, this film, as directed by Anatole Litvak, is more polished than the usual Warner’s programmer. The myth is ambiguous with a very clever climax; a most fresh and consuming film.

- by 1939, the gangster cycle had fair about runs its course and the Hays Code was more eager in how the gangster reformed than how he operated. “Invisible Stripes” is more a social melodrama than a gangster film and stars the wooden George Raft as an ex-crim trying to re-establish himself while on parole. Bogart is in attend again and a very young William Holden appears. It is a monotonous and predictable film.

- “Larceny Inc”, released in 1942, is a very comic comedy with Robinson out of jail and buying a luggage shop adjoining a bank in order to shatter in. Jack Carson is particularly funny as a travelling salesman. Peruse out for his sales pitch on his range of luggage – hilarious! Also the incomparable Ed Brophy with his hysterical Brooklyn accent appears as one of Robinson’s sidekicks.

All the prints are in first-rate condition and the DVDs are packed with extras – cartoons, short films and trailers as portion of “Warners’s Night at the Movies”. A number of the films have expert commentaries. The one for “Larceny Inc” is lousy. A seperate DVD is included which contains a very detailed documentary about the development of the gangster genre at Warner Brothers. The best parts are the snippets of archival interviews with such people as Joan Blondell, that spunky moll important to the early Warner’s product, and directors such as William Wellman (“The Public Enemy”) and Raoul Walsh (“White Heat”) . If you are keen in the history of Warner Brothers, then the documentary is engaging but hold in mind that most of its enlighten has been covered in commentaries and featurettes included on the DVDs of the films which produce up Warners Gangster Collections.

As usual, Warner Brothers have produced a wonderful value package.

The films in this edition of the Warner Gangsters are The Astonishing Dr. Clitterhouse, The Small Giant, Larceny, Inc., Invisible Stripes and Kid Galahad. The films absorb bonus features such as rarely-seen Warner Bros. shorts, vintage newsreels and classic cartoons, plus novel theatrical trailers. Also included in the collection is an all-new Warner Home Video feature-length documentary, Public Enemies: The Golden Age of the Gangster Film which takes a detailed behold at the crime genre and how it came about. Kid Galahad will be available as a single title. Notably absent in this residence is James Cagney, but we have fair about all of his gangster films on DVD now. All that’s left are his precodes that don’t really fit into the gangster genre.

The Unbelievable Dr. Clitterhouse (1938)

Dr. Clitterhouse (Edward G. Robinson) is fascinated by the examine of the physical and mental states of lawbreakers, so he joins a gang of jewel thieves for a closer view in this sad comedy. Claire Trevor co-stars as a savvy crime queen, and Humphrey Bogart plays Rocks Valentine, whom Robinson calls “a delicate specimen of pure viciousness.” The movie also marks the open of one of film’s most great collaborations. John Huston, who was to later roar Bogart in The Maltese Falcon, The Savor of the Sierra Madre and The African Queen, co-wrote the screenplay of The Fabulous Dr. Clitterhouse.

Larceny, Inc. (1942)

Edward G. Robinson plays Pressure Maxwell, who emerges from Squawk Divulge planning to hurry a dog track with his cronies Jug (Broderick Crawford) and Weepy (Edward Brophy) . But the belief needs funding, so the group (assisted by Jane Wyman) opens a luggage shop as a front while attempting to tunnel into the bank next door. Unfortunately, the store is a success and this puts a comedic dent in Maxwell’s plans.

Invisible Stripes (1939)

Parolee Chuck Martin (Humphrey Bogart) is going straight wait on to a life of crime when he is released. In lockup or out in the civilian world, he knows he’ll forever wear “Invisible Stripes”. Bogart often played these tormented souls in the 30’s during his long apprenticeship at Warner Bros. Top-billed George Raft plays Martin’s ex-Sing Order yard mate Cliff Taylor, who vows to hotfoot away from crime and be a role model for his kid brother (William Holden) . But what awaits Taylor are suspicion, public disdain and joblessness, so he turns to a fellow ex-con for assistance.

Edward G. Robinson is racketeer/fight promoter Cut Donati and Humphrey Bogart is Turkey Morgan who is also a fight promoter and Donati’s rival. Bette Davis plays the moll who has a soft set for the bellhop (Wayne Morris) that Gash is grooming for the heavyweight title. Michael Curtiz directs this first of his six collaborations with Bogart that would include Casablanca and We’re No Angels.

The series is surprisingly bright an that even though it doesn’t have the gundam mecha battles or major conflicts it aloof becomes an addictive series as you behold it from commence to extinguish. The series begins in the future after the earth is almost eradicated of life after a nearby star goes nova and kills about 95% of the human population, after this catastrophe the humans have built massive stations in state with the hope of using advanced technology to stave off another worry like the one they’ve to face before. The sage also tells of a group of young pilots with the job of helping these stations and other missions on the residence stations and one in particular Shima Katase a computer programing genius with growing exceptional piloting skills is the main focus point of the series. The characters are very consuming both the pilot candidates and their trainers and the commanders as they advance out to one another and gain friendships as well as some romantic connections between some of the characters as well. The yarn for the series while not as dramatic as other sci-fi anime series is collected fun to see and should not attach off other anime fans who’ve never seen the exhibit before, the animation and notify cast are very grand for the series and while it’s not widescreen the represent leaves no complaints. the extras aren’t powerful unbiased the usual trailers and textless intro/ending songs for the point to but for the sign I got this for from the seller again no complaints. So if Funimation doesn’t re-release the series you can do what I’ve done and fair grasp from one of these sellers and again for $40 dollars for the series a determined must find…
